Alfonso is Professor of Fluid Dynamics at the University of Oxford and leads the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory. His research focuses on (but is not limited to) the study of drops and liquid jets. Other interests range from biofluids and geophysical flows, to inkjet printing. Current research activities deal with the breakup of liquid jets, drop impact and splashing dynamics, novel droplet generation techniques, microfluidics, mixing, printing of liquid crystals for photonic applications (piezo DoD and EHD), and laboratory analogues of the Quasibiennial Oscillation. A variety of modern imaging techniques such as laser fluorescence and velocimetry, shadowgraphy, and high-speed imaging, together with high-resolution DNS and theoretical models are applied to reveal the complex dynamics of these phenomena. The Laboratory maintains collaborations with groups in the UK, Spain, France, USA, Mexico, and Germany.
