Ian is a Professor of Industrial Mathematics in the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford, and a Professorial Fellow in Industrial Mathematics and the Janet Dyson Fellow at Mansfield College. He leads an Industrial Mathematics Group in the Mathematical Institute. His group interests lie in a broad range of fluid dynamical challenges, from water purification strategies to the manufacture of glass for computer tablet screens.
His group uses a blend of modelling, asymptotic, and numerical techniques to enable predictions to be made for the behaviour of such physical systems, and in particular, to give insight into their optimal operating strategies. He collaborates with a range of scientists from many disciplines, as well as industries, to ensure that his mathematical models address key challenges.
